But You, O God, Alone Do Save!

Original tune: According to Thy Gracious Word (Avon); Hugh Wilson, 1766-1824
Psalm 109

Alone upon a cross he hung
No rapture for a King.
No friend of his could e’er be found
But from his death a spring.

He gave his life to ransom yours
Our hatred for his love.
The cross of shame was his reward
The father pleased above.

No death, no pow’r, no sin can hold
Where grace has broken free.
He gave himself to prayer for you
Though we did curse at Thee.

But you, O God, alone do Save!
Redeem for your namesake.
In wrath show love, mercy, and grace
Our sin your son forsake.

Now to the death of sin, I pray
I lean upon that tree.
My hate, my guilt, my cursing heart
By grace, my sin I see.
