Grace that’s Sovereign Free

Original Music: Amazing Grace; (anonymous) Traditional American Melody from Carrell and Clayton's Virginia Harmon; 1831 arr: Edwin Excell.

I heard that Grace became a man,
Divine humility,
How could such grace have come this far?
But grace that’s Sovereign free.

For God spared not his only son,
To make his glories known.
While dead in sin, all hated Him,
His glory did atone.

This is love not that we love God,
But that he loved us first.
He died our death, displayed God’s worth,
Crushing the dreadful curse.

No works of mine will ever stand,
The flesh will not believe.
It must be grace that conquers man
And cause him to believe.

By grace through faith in Christ alone,
The heart’s only true plea.
His righteousness is made my own,
Imputed unto me.

Praise God for his amazing grace,
Once hung upon the tree.
He bore my sins and wrath deserved,
Oh, grace that’s Sovereign free.
